This is another selection of tracks from Harambé's archives, recorded between 1998 and 2001. It includes Shadow Of Your Memory and Signs Of Life, the first tracks the band were to record in their own studio, without the involvement of outside producers and engineers: these two tracks, with their looped, lo-fi beats, seductive vocals, atmospheric soundscapes and bass-heavy, hypnotic grooves, served as the blueprint for the band's recorded output over the next few years, a formula to which the band regularly returned, as shown in the early version of At This Distance included here (a new version of this track later resurfaced on the official 2002 debut album, Roots). However, this collection also contains a rare live recording, Speedfreak, and this gives some insight into the reasons for the band's mid-career split: it shows the disparity between the band's mostly subdued and slow-grooving studio recordings and their passionate, energetic, funk-fuelled live performances. It was this musical shizophrenia that finally led to the departure of the band's original lead vocalist, Terry Joe: while he favoured the slower, more abstract and reflective material, the rest of the band were looking for a way to incorporate more of the vitality of their live gigs into their studio recordings. In retrospect, Prayer For Silence was a turning point for the band: while undoubtedly a strong song, the slow groove feels claustrophobic and stifling, and the track feels in danger of tearing itself apart. However, before Terry left, he was to commit what was possibly his finest vocal performance to disk in the showboating Over You. Its combination of gritty, passionate blues and soaring vocal was a sign that perhaps the band could have overcome their creative differences if circumstances had allowed it. ![]() |
