This is the germination of an idea - the sound of a band searching for its place in the scheme of things. As on any voyage into uncharted territory, there are detours and dead-ends - waypoints are reached by tortuous or roundabout means, or the traveller stumbles across an impassable canyon, cutting him off from the peak he spies in the distance. There are successes, but, more importantly, there are failures. In short, there is potential. These are the mishaps and misadventures that are the making of a band. More than any carefully plotted album, which is necessarily calculated to present a polished, united image to the world, these Uncut tracks show the real workings and character of a band. They show the gears in motion, the moving hand. This collection of tracks covers the period from 1998 to 2000, and features the earliest incarnation of Harambé with core members Karl Clews on bass and Gerard Blyth on guitar joined by vocalist Terry Joe, keyboard player Bill Gannon and, on drums, Dean Gannon, who was later to become the band's lead singer on their official debut album, Roots. During this period, Bill Gannon was soon to be replaced by Jack Routh, and Dean was to leave the band for two years, his drum stool being occupied by Jack's childhood friend, Phil Shudell. Tracks 2, 3, 4 and 5 were originally released in October 1999 as a four-track EP entitled Ground Zero in the UK on On The Run Records. Track 1, Gottafindaway, became Harambé's first single, released in the UK on On The Run Records in October 2000. ![]() |
